In light of the recent Boston bombings and the suspects' connection to the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth the school has stepped up security for Saturday's commencement ceremony.

As part of the security measures students can expect to see an increased security presence on campus during the festivities. The school notes that any and all items on the property are subject to inspection but certain items will be prohibited.

Students and guests are barred from bringing bags (including gift bags), briefcases, wrapped presents, backpacks, computers, laptops, tablets, food and beverages, laser pointers, balloon, beach balls or fireworks into or around the event.

In addition, each student is allowed to invite two guests inside the amphitheater for the graduation. These guests will be provided with tickets. Additional family and friends will be permitted to stand in an over-flow tent on the university grounds outside the amphitheater.

In an email to students, faculty, and staff the schools said, ‘Here at UMass Dartmouth, we are fortunate to have outstanding public safety personnel, student affairs professionals, supportive faculty, highly skilled professional and support staff, and exemplary student leaders, who have demonstrated an unyielding commitment to academic quality. Together over the past few weeks, they have re-established an atmosphere conducive to teaching, learning, and discovery. They have defined what it means to be UMass Dartmouth Strong."
