A fire broke out in a Westport home around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday morning tearing through the second floor and the attic.

A woman and her 17-year-old granddaughter were at the Jillian Way home when a neighbor alerted them that flames were coming from the top floor of the home.

The two evacuated the home immediately and were uninjured.

The blaze took fire fighters over two and a half hour to knock down. The cause remains under investigation but officials say it is not suspicious.

Fire officials say the fire started in the back of the home on the exterior and as a result fire alarms did not go off immediately. The fire spread quickly to the house with flames reaching over thirty feet high.

The building had been determined a total loss and the family of five who lived there is displaced.
