WEST KINGSTOWN, R.I. - A 17-year old girl is in serious condition with life-threatening injuries  after her SUV collided with a RIPTA bus on Route 138 in West Kingstown.

Police say shortly before noon, the girl was driving over the bridge near Kingston Station when her car somehow collided with the front-end of a RIPTA bus. The impact was strong enough to shatter the windshield of the bus.

RIPTA officials say the driver was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries. The six passengers on board weren't hurt, but the juvenile driver of the SUV is in critical condition at Rhode Island Hospital.

Police shut down the portion of Route 138 near Kingston Station for several hours while accident reconstruction teams attempted to piece together what happened. So far, authorities have not determined a cause of the crash.

This crash was the second accident involving a RIPTA bus in three days. On Friday, May 3, two RIPTA buses collided at Kennedy Plaza. At least five people were taken to the hospital in that accident.
