Voter turnout was light across Massachusetts for the U.S. Senate primary.

John Davis, a Democratic voter who supports Congressman Stephen Lynch said, "There are still a lot of moderate Democrats out there, and they are looking for a candidate like Stephen Lynch, who is a middle of the road, rational thinker."

The other Democrat in the race is long time Congressman Ed Markey.

Then there are the Republicans.

Voter Shannon Johnson is a registered Republican and said, "I voted for Gabriel Gomez. I appreciate his service to our country and his leadership through being a business owner."

The other Republicans in the race are Michael Sullivan, and State Rep. Dan Winslow:

ABC6 Chief Political Reporter Mark Curtis said, "This Senate race isn't just important to Massachusetts. Ultimately, the outcome could help determine which party controls the entire U.S. Senate next year."

While 35 percent of Massachusetts voters are Democrats; just 11 percent are Republicans.

The biggest voter group is the independents at 52 percent.

And as we found out, they are beholden to no one.

Independent voter Dan McLaughlin said, "I have been voting primarily Republican but not because of the party, but more because of the conservative stance. (Q: But today you voted Democratic?) Today I specifically voted Democratic."

Another Independent voter, Kathy Harum said, "I am an independent and each time I vote I look for the best candidate, Democrat or Republican, that I believe will lead us well. (Q: And this time you are picking Mike Sullivan the Republican?) Yes I am, Yes I am."

So with nothing else on the June special election ballot, Republicans have a shot, as long as they get most of the independent voters.
