The local family of a mother and daughter seriously injured in the bombings in Boston, stepped away from their bedside Monday night to attend a fundraiser at home.

The nightmare started for Priscilla Corcoran and her husband when she found out their son, daughter-in-law and grandchild were all at the finish line when the bombs went off.

The North Kingstown couple's son Kevin Corcoran was the luckiest, suffering only minor injuries. His wife Celeste lost both of her legs. Their 17-year-old daughter Sydney suffered a near fatal shrapnel wound.

"You play it over in your mind," Sydney said from her hospital bed. "You can smell it."

As they recover in the same room at a rehab facility in Boston, hundreds turned out to a restaurant in East Greenwich, where Kevin's childhood friends put on a fundraiser for his family.

"They are going to be in need of so much help. Their lives are forever changed," Kevin's older brother Timothy Corcoran said. "They need a new home and to pay for medical bills."

The need was so clear, organizers say they hardly had to ask for donations.

"It was incredible. Donations just came from Hollywood, California and Hawaii," organizer Allen Gammons said.

There was a silent auction, a live band and a raffle to raise gas money for the family in Rhode Island, who has traveled back and forth to Boston more times than they can count.

It is a long road to recovery, made easier, with the community's support and their family's spirit.

"There is so much hope, you cannot help but be lifted by their spirits," Priscilla Corcoran said. "They're so positive that we know we're going to get through this."
