PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island has pledged about $1 million over four years on public awareness campaigns to increase the use of seat belts statewide including child safety seats.

The state Department of Transportation and the Rhode Island Legislative Black and Latino Caucus say they are seeking a third round of grant applications from communities and organizations.

The department will hold meetings in Providence, Pawtucket, and Newport for those interested in applying. Applicants must attend at least one meeting to be eligible for a grant.

The department and the Black and Latino Caucus Community Partnership, a nonprofit organization working with the caucus, will evaluate the proposals.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is making the funds available since passage of a primary seat belt law in 2011.
