CRANSTON, R.I. - A home on Piedmont street will be demolished after an explosion rocked the foundation and blew the back of the home completely off.

Fire officials say the blast could be heard from three blocks away. Neighbors in the area say they didn't know what was happening until they looked to the man's house and saw debris sitting in homes down the street.

According to fire officials, the blast happened around 7 a.m. at 23 Piedmont Street. Investigators aren't yet sure what caused the blast, but they don't think it is suspicious.

The fire department says the home's single occupant, a 90 year-old man, was home at the time of the explosion. Neighbors pulled him out of the basement and he was taken to the hospital with burns.

Less than an hour after the blast, National Grid had cut power to the home and rendered the neighborhood safe. The explosion damaged several homes nearby, but no one else was injured.
