CF Chess team finishes in the top ten in national tournament

Posted: Updated:

The Central Falls High School and Middle School Chess teams finish as one of the top ten schools in the National Chess Tournament in Nashville Tennessee.

The high school team finished 8th out of 65 teams and Calcutt Middle School tied for seventh place out of 53 teams.

Both teams were only 3 points away from the first place teams in their division.

The event hosted more than 5,000 players and coach Frank DelBonis said, "the competition was tougher than ever."

Coach Dan Amadio said "There were twice as many participants this year than in 2012, so a top-10 win this year is like a top-five win any other year."

To get to the tournament the teams reached out to the public for helping even attracting a $2,500 donation from famous actor Alec Baldwin. "Our fundraising efforts have been tremendously successful this year.  Local individuals and businesses in the greater Central Falls community have donated over $8,000 to take us to the Super-Nationals," said DelBonis. "We really are so thrilled at the level of giving this year—now we can do long-range planning, looking towards endowments and scholarships for our graduating seniors."

Central Falls High School will honor the team on Friday at 2 p.m. The celebration will be open to the public.
