The Swansea Public Library board of trustees met to decide the fate of Penny the cat tonight.
The trustees were determining whether to allow Penny to stay in the library for the remainder of her life and how to handle a list of conditions issued by Patrick Higgins. Higgins complained about Penny in a letter saying the presence of the cat violates the People with Disabilities Act because people may be allergic to the cat. The board decided since Higgins had not lodged a formal complaint no action was necessary.
Higgins did not show up to the public meeting stating that he was concerned for his safety and had receive threats as a result of the issue.
After public outcry Higgins said he is willing to let the cat stay if the library agrees to not replace her after she dies and meet a list of several other conditions.
The president of the Board of Trustees Brian Lowney tells us that he expects the matter to be resolved quickly this evening.
