It was a somber Easter in Cumberland Sunday when police were called to a home on Nate Whipple Highway where they discovered an apparent murder suicide.

Police responded to the Victorian Court condominiums at 6 Nate Whipple Highway #301 on Sunday evening around 5:20 p.m. for reports of shots fired.

Upon arrival police discovered the bodies of a 73-year-old man and a 70-year-old woman in the bedroom. The woman had two gunshot wounds to her torso and the man had what appeared to be a self-inflicted wound to the head. The man and woman were husband and wife.

Cumberland Police Chief John Desmarais said police also discovered a note written by the man at the scene. The couples daughter as well as three grandchildren were in the home at the time of the incident, and police confirm it was a family member who alerted police after hearing the gun shots.

The couples son tells ABC6 his mother suffered from dementia, and that his father was also living in physical pain. Neighbors say the two appeared to be very much in love. They were always together, and never showed any sign that something was wrong in their relationship.

Police are not releasing the couples names. Their bodies have been turned over to the state Medical Examiners Office along with the note.
