As of Monday it will no longer be illegal to possess small amount of marijuana in Rhode Island.

Last June Governor Lincoln Chafee signed a bill into law that replaces criminal penalties for possession of up to one ounce of marijuana with a $150 fine.

The fine will be issued similar to a ticket. For minors caught with marijuana, parents will be notified and the juvenile will have to complete a drug and alcohol education course, perform community service, and pay the fine.

Rhode Island is now one of 13 states, including Massachusetts that have decriminalized marijuana.
