There will be no more February break for students for the next school year in 2014. That is for students enrolled in Taunton Massachusetts public schools.
The school committee decided that in order to grapple with weather related cancellations the elimination of February break is necessary.
After 4 school day cancellations due to snow and 2 due to Superstorm Sandy the school year has been extended until June 28. School cannot extend into July due to the way that the teacher's contract is written.
Schools in Andover Massachusetts are considering opening school on a Saturday in order to make up for lost time.
Meanwhile, in Cumberland, R.I. the school committee is planning a vote next week to decide if the schools should also eliminate April break. The Cumberland decision is not weather related but instead based on plans to end school earlier in June and extend winter break.
