Girls in Cranston may get to dance with their fathers again.
The Senate Education Committee will hear legislation aimed at addressing the father-daughter dance, mother-son baseball game controversy that erupted last year in Cranston when the school Superintendent eliminated the gender specific event after a parent complained to the ACLU.
The bill introduced by Senator Hanna Gallo (D-Cranston, West-Warwick) would add language to the existing law pertaining to gender discrimination in schools. The new language would allow schools to offer activities for students of one sex, "including but not limited to, father-daughter/ mother-son activities, provided that comparable activities are offered for students of the other sex."
The Cranston School Committee took up the issue in 2012 but decided that it would be best handled at the statewide level as the law would need to be amended.
The hearing is scheduled for Wednesday March 20 at 4:30 p.m. in room 212.
