For Fr. Edward Murphy of Saint Anthony of Padula in New Bedford watching the events of the Conclave unfold is extra special. Some people have pointed to his mentor, Boston Cardinal Sean O'Malley, as the next potential Pope.
The pair met when Fr. Murphy was a seminary student in Philadelphia. O'Malley, then the Bishop of Fall River, took a young Murphy under his wing.
"One thing led to another and he said to me I'd be well suited to come to his dioceses and become a priest for the Fall River dioceses," said Murphy.
The two became close over the years. In fact is was O'Malley who would ordain Murphy in 1998.
"I always felt that I had a father figure there," said Fr. Murphy.
Father Murphy is so fond of his mentor that in 2006 he traveled to Rome to be there when then Bishop O'Malley became a Cardinal. Murphy keeps a photo taken soon after that trip as a reminder of the kind of man O'Malley is, and the kind of Pope he could be.
