PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Over two dozen high school juniors from around the state met Saturday morning with U.S. Congressman David Cicilline (D-RI) to discuss the topic of bullying, in the first meeting of Cicilline's Congressional Youth Cabinet.

The meeting focused on aspects of school bullying including its underlying causes, impact on victims, and proposed solutions. Two staffers from the Institute for the Study and Practice of Nonviolence in Providence were also present, and discussed their firsthand experience in trying to stop bullying and harassment in schools.

The 27 high school juniors had a chance to tell the Congressman about aspects of bullying which they felt need to be addressed. "East Providence High School has a large population of gay and lesbian people, and you see them getting bullied and picked on a lot," said East Providence High School student Lance Faria. "I'm hoping we can get that resolved, because that affects a lot of kids at our high school."

Students who were present at today's meeting will meet with Cicilline three more times this year, and have a chance to voice their opinions on a variety of issues facing Rhode Island youth.
