It's a competition that is normally dominated by boys, but this year the "Rhody Girls" from Providence Career and Technical Academy won the top prize at the state finals over 35 other teams, the first all girls team to win.

Diliany Abreu who is a senior on the team, explains how hard the girls worked. "We actually worked really hard for it, we put in so many hours, sometimes we were here on Saturdays, after school...Christmas."

Team mentor, Miki Oliver is extremely proud of the work the team put in. "They are so dedicated, the reason I'm so proud of them this year is they spent more time here than the boys did!"

In October, every robotics team in the state is given the same task, then four months later all the teams come together and compete against each other with the robots they built and programmed.

On top of being the first all girl team to win, this years robot was special, it was dedicated to the schools nurse, Barbara Rios, who is a breast cancer survivor. Stacey Tejeda, one of the "Rhody Girls" explains, "It was very special because she is very dear to us, she is very close to us. She brought knowledge to something that we weren't really aware of until it happened to somebody that was close to us."

Next up for the team is to raise money to head to the worldwide finals in St. Louis. Over one hundred teams will come together and compete over a three day period. Kennia Castillo says, "We know our robot can do it, its more of mental thing, we have to prepare ourselves mentally because it's a big challenge we are representing Rhode Island and we want to bring the gold home."
