Woman pushes pickle company to pick a new name

Posted: Updated:

A Cranston woman has successfully taken on a pickle company and won.

Chelley Martinka said when she was pregnant she craved pickles but when she was at the pickle aisle one time the name of one brand caught her eye, "Kosher Dill Midgets."

Martinka was instantly outrages by the name considering her 10-month-old daughter Adelaide has dwarfism.

Martinka took action. She launched a blog, aisforadelaide.com, and a YouTube video protesting the pickle brand name and she contacted Gedney Foods in Minnesota, the producer of Cains and Del Monte pickles.

Two months later the pickle company contacted Martinka to say they have decided to in fact change the name of the pickle variety. The company would not comment to media but Martinka said it will take about 6 months to deplete the stock of "Kosher Dill Midgets" or Del Monte "Sweet Midget Pickles."

The new name being considered is "Kosher Dill Mini Munchers," and "Kosher Dill Babies."

But Martinka said the fight is not over. She will now work to have the "m-word" removed from public discourse and from other products.
