Pets allowed at Providence warming shelter

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency (EMA) has announced that based on the progress made on clearing Rhode Island's roadways, Governor Chafee has lifted the travel ban on Rhode Island roadways at 4 p.m. Saturday.

For people who do not currently have heat, electricity or who require immediate life safety needs, the Red Cross has announced that shelters are open in the following locations:

  • Jamestown: Melrose Elementary School
  • Middletown: Gaudet Middle School
  • Providence: Providence Career and Technical Academy (pets)
  • Tiverton: Tiverton Middle School
  • Wakefield: South Kingstown High School
  • Warwick: Warwick Vets High School
  • Westerly: Westerly Senior Center

For those who have pets, the EMA has announced that Providence shelter will allow animals, as long as they are crated. The owner is responsible for the care and food supplies of their pets.

The Red Cross recommends that people who are in need of shelter bring some personal items:

  • Pillows, blankets, sleeping bags, or air mattresses
  • Extra clothing, shoes, eyeglasses, etc.
  • Folding chairs, lawn chairs or cots
  • Personal hygiene supplies
  • Flashlights and batteries
  • Quiet games, books and favorite toys
  • Important papers
  • Prescription medications
