While many Rhode Islander marked the historic passage of the same sexed marriage bill in the House Judiciary Committee, Senator Frank Ciccone was busy with an idea of his own.

On Tuesday, Ciccone introduced legislation S 0096 which would put the question to the voters.

The resolution would ask voters if they support amending the Rhode Island Constitution in order to change the language that defines marriage as the "lawful union of one man and one woman, provided the recognition and definition of marriage shall not prohibit the recognition of a lawful civil union between two members of the same gender."

The resolution would need to pass both the House and the Senate before the question could go before the voters.

If proposed and approved as a constitutional amendment, Governor Lincoln Chafee would have no veto power over the resolution. On the other hand, the Gov. could veto a voter referendum on gay marriage.
