Rhode Island Group Pushes for Same Sex Marriage Law - ABC6 - Providence, RI and New Bedford, MA News, Weather

Dozens of people gathered at Central Congregational Church in Providence Monday, under the banner of "Rhode Islanders United for Marriage."
The group included Governor Chafee, Lt. Gov. Elizabeth Roberts and General Treasurer Gina Raimondo, as well as lawmakers who have sponsored same sex marriage legislation in this year's General Assembly.
Also present were various religious and labor leaders, who also support legalized same sex marriage.
Right now there are bills in the House and Senate to legalize gay weddings, with the first House hearing in committee set for Tuesday afternoon.
The group, National Organization for Marriage, is also planning to fight the same sex marriage legislation. And religious leaders opposed to the unions have a 4 p.m. rally scheduled at the Statehouse on Tuesday. They would rather see a ballot referendum that would let Rhode Island voters decide the gay marriage issue, rather than the General Assembly.
