Take a walk in Providence and chances are you won't get very far before you hit a sidewalk still covered in snow 5 days after the storm. The once powdery snow now crushed into ice. Pedestrians carefully watching every step.
"If I walk on the sidewalk I could fall. If I walk in the street I could get hit because it's pushed way out. There's no really side area to walk on the street," said Nathan Shapiro who trudged along Smith St. Thursday..
City businesses and residents have 8 hours after a storm to remove the snow from side walk ways. Police and inspectors with the Department of public works ready to enforce the ordinance.
The cities hoping that a $25 fine will be enough to encourage people to shovel their sidewalks, but for frequent offenders it could cost them as much as $500.
Warwick is stepping up their snow removal enforcement as well. Officers have not issued any tickets at this time, but say they have had several complaints, particularly in the area of Aldrich Jr. High.
