Bruins Outlast Devils In Shootout

Posted: Updated:

The Providence Bruins defeated the Albany Devils 2-1 this evening at The Times Union Center in a shootout and improved to 14-8-0-2 on the season. Michael Hutchinson posted 29 saves, notching his 3rd win of the season. David Warsofsky had the game-winning goal in the shootout to give Providence five straight wins and end the same length streak for the Devils.

Providence had registered at least a point in each of its last seven games (six wins), including four wins in a row. The Devils won a handful straight before Saturday, which was two more wins in a row than the team recorded at any point last season.

Hutchinson had one of his best games of the season, with the highlight reel saves starting early against his New York foes. He made a diving stop across the crease after giving up a rebound from a kick save in the early minutes of the first period.

In the first period, Providence kick-started the scoring with Zach Trotman's second goal of the season. Trotman took a Jamie Tardif faceoff win to the top of the slot and hammered a slapper top shelf on Jeff Frazee to give Providence a 1-0 lead 10:46 into the game. The helper gave Tardif a five-game point streak, with eight points since December 7. (He also had three goals spread out over the previous three games.)

The Devils scored their ninth power play goal of the season in the second period to knot the game up at a goal apiece. Bobby Butler redirected a Joe Whitney shot on the nearside of the crease. Some aggressive Albany played created the opportunity in the first place, as an extended rush only ended from a Ryan Button delay of game minor.

Trotman's high sticking minor late in the third period gave the Devils another power play with 13+ seconds remaining, Albany was unable to capitalize on either side of the break.

In OT, the Devils had two different man advantages, but came up empty-handed. Providence had the best opportunity in the extra frame, as Christian Hanson had multiple volleys on Frazee in a row before Brandon Burlon streak into the crease to make a stop.

The shootout went nine rounds, with Albany scoring first. Mattias Tedenby had a top-shelf backhander past Hutchinson in the only lead the Devils had of the shootout.

Providence tied it up with Tardif's goal, as he tucked it inside the near post above Frazee's shoulder. The P-Bruins took a 2-1 lead on Chris Bourque's beautiful fake, followed by a shot placed perfectly inside the near post. Mike Sislo tied the shootout back up with a score of his own, sending the puck off the far post and in. The next nine shooters all missed their respective shots before Warsofsky put his bid low near the post to the left of the Albany netminder to put Providence up for good.

Hutchinson made the final save necessary to seal the victory for Providence, as Stephen Gionta tried to beat him on the near side.
