East Providence Cancels Game Over Pay Dispute

Coaches in East Providence aren't being paid, and some of them are taking a stand.

The East Providence-Hendricken boys basketball game was canceled tonight, and it might be the first of many.

Boys basketball coach Alex Butler tells ABC 6 sports reporter Matt Blanchette it's because he hasn't been paid for volleyball season.

All of the fall sports coaches have yet to be paid.

The school's budget is now run by the East Providence Budget Commission, which met on Thursday night.

East Providence Superindenent Dr. John Degoes told Matt Blanchette on Friday the checks were printed, but the commission did not approve them at that meeting.

There was no mention of paying coaches on the commision agenda, which is located on it's web site.

Attempts to reach commission memebers to find out why the checks were not approved ,and when they would be, were unsuccesful as of Friday night.

Butler, and other coaches concern,  is that the committee does not meet again until January third and may not approve the payment until then, potentiually as a reduced rate.

Which leaves the players from both teams affected.

Alex Hurley, a senior on the Townies told Matt Blanchette via twitter, "its just a bad situation to be in. we were all excited to play tonight. i fully support coach butler's decision though."

It's also worth noting that the East Providence hockey team did play Friday night, and although most coaches side with Butler., Athletic Director Paul Amaral says not all sports and games are being cancelled yet.

Superintendant Degoes says he hopes for a resolution as soon as possible.
