Newport Police have arrested a suspect in connection the stabbing death of 44 year old Anthony Simmons Wednesday night just after 11pm.
Police were called to 53 1/2 Gould Street at 11:18pm where they found Simmons stabbed several times. He was brought to Newport Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
A short distance from the scene police located and arrested 42 year old Joseph Perryman. During their investigation they recovered a knife believed to be used in the stabbing and also took clothing worn by Perryman worn in the assault.
Perryman was held without bail on a murder charge Thursday morning.
Neighbors say Simmons lived with his girlfriend in the apartment. She heard him scream from the other room and called 911.
Police say Simmons and Perryman knew each other. They supposedly got into an argument before Perryman pulled out the knife.
Police were seen taking out evidence from 5 Gould Street late Thursday morning, where Perryman was allegedly staying, just down the block from the killing.
