BRISTOL, R.I. - Police have identified the man who died in a Saturday evening crash on the Mount Hope Bridge, which also injured five others.
Police say Paul Matthews, 63, of Barrington was pronounced dead at the scene of a crash that shut down the Mt. Hope Bridge for nearly three hours.
According to police, Matthews was driving over the bridge towards Portsmouth around 7 p.m. when it crossed left of center, into the left lane.
Matthews collided head-on with a Toyota RAV4, driven by John Kelchner of Portsmouth, R.I. Kelchner and his wife were taken to Newport Hospital where they were treated and released, and two other passengers in Kelchner's car were taken to Rhode Island Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
Matthews was traveling with one other person. Lenor C. Andrade, of Warren, R.I. is recovering at an area hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
Police have ruled out alcohol as a possible cause of the crash, but police are still trying to determine what happened.
