UPDATE: Governor Chafee says the State House tree will be lit up for the holidays. The cancellation was miscommunication.
The State House spruce was lit for the first time Monday night, but this year, there will not be an official lighting ceremony.
Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee pulled the plug on the show. He is currently away in France, but his spokesperson says it is because he need to focus on other important issues.
However, some say the real reason is because the spruce sparked so much controversy last year, when Chafee called it a holiday tree instead of a Christmas tree. They say choosing to cancel it altogether this year is not the answer.
After hearing the news, Republican Representative Doreen Costa went to work planning her own lighting at the State House. She says the only question is whether or not she will hold a lighting in her office or host her own ceremony in the State House rotunda.
