Bears Fall to Providence in 27th Annual Mayor's Cup, 7-0
PROVIDENCE, RI – Providence (6-5-1) broke open a 1-0 game with 6:28 remaining in the second period, scoring on two power play opportunities just 2:23 apart and went on to score four more goals in the third period to skate to a 7-0 win over the Brown men's hockey team (2-4-2) in the 27th Annual Mayor's Cup battle on Saturday afternoon at Meehan Auditorium.
"I didn't think we were very good at all and that was not Brown hockey," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "We got exactly what we deserved. Credit to them; we got out worked, out battled and out competed by a much better hockey team tonight. They were stronger, tougher, and they got exactly what they deserved."
The Bears came out with urgency, dominating the opening three minutes of play. However, Providence scored the game's first goal at the 3:29 mark when Kyle Murphy batted the puck past junior Marco De Filippo (Auronzo Di Cadore, Itlay) after a scrum in front.
The Bears kept it a one-goal game until late in the second period when PC opened the game up.
In the decisive second period, Brown got into penalty trouble, giving Providence four straight power play chances. The Friars capitalized on two in a span of 2:23 to take a 3-0 lead. During this time, Brown was without its top two defensemen, as juniors Dennis Robertson (Fort St. John, British Columbia) and Matt Wahl (Wellington, FL) had been whistled for a two-minute roughing penalty and a 10-minute misconduct that carried 2:14 into the third period.
Drew Brown gave his team a 2-0 lead when he took a pass from Kevin Hart, skated to the bottom of the right faceoff circle, and beat De Filippo over his left glove with a wrist shot, knocking the water bottle on top of the net briefly up in the air at 13:32.
The Friars extended their lead to 3-0 at 15:55 when Tom Parisi fired a low shot towards the goal from the center of the blueline. The puck just beat De Filippo to the left side for PC's second power play goal of the game.
Prior to the penalties on Wahl and Robertson, Brown was actually on the power play. However, a cross-checking call against sophomore Matt Lorito (Oakville, Ontario) ignited tensions on both sides, which led to two players from each team getting matching two-minute roughing penalties and a 10-minute misconduct. The two teams skated four-on-four for 1:29 and just as the Friars were about to go up on a power play, junior Garnet Hathaway (Kennebunkport, ME) was whistled for roughing. The call resulted in a two-man advantage for 31 seconds, which Brown would kill, but the Friars capitalized on the ensuing power play to go up 2-0.
Then, less than a minute after the goal, another Brown defenseman, sophomore Joey De Concilys (St. Catharine's, Ontario), was called for roughing to give PC its third straight power play, which resulted in Parisi's goal.
Freshman Brandon Pfeil (West Vancouver, British Columbia) looked to get Brown on the board roughly 4:30 into the third period, but his shot from the right circle hit the near post, as the Bears were kept off the board.
Despite getting outshot over the final 20 minutes, 21-12, the Friars found the back of the net four more times, scoring twice in the last four minutes for the 7-0 result.
For the game, Providence outshot Brown, 40-35, finishing 3-7 on the man-advantage and 4-4 on the penalty-kill. De Filippo recorded 32 saves in 58:08, before giving way to junior Joe Mello (Pawtucket, RI), who made one save in his first career appearance. PC's Jon Gillies recorded 35 saves, including 21 in the third period, to earn the shutout.
Brown will close out its current five-game homestand and its three-game non-league stretch on Sunday afternoon, November 25th, when it hosts Holy Cross in a 4:00 p.m. game. The Bears return to ECAC Hockey play on Saturday, December 1st when they travel to New Haven to face Yale in a 7:00 p.m. contest.
