Firefighters responded to a fire at Sgt. William Carney Memorial Academy in New Bedford Thursday morning. Flames broke out around 5:30 am in a first floor classroom. It took crews about 30 minutes to put the fire out.
Firefighters say the doors were locked and do not know the cause of the fire at this time, but do not believe it is suspicious.
Teachers gathered at the school Thursday morning to assess the damage. Summer school classes for 250 students are canceled Thursday and Friday because of the fire damage.
