NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) -- The No. 2 Democrat in the U.S. House is visiting Rhode Island to discuss workforce training and tour Electric Boat's submarine manufacturing plant at Quonset Point.

Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer of Maryland is scheduled to join Democratic U.S. representatives James Langevin and David Cicilline Friday at events throughout the state.

The tour of Electric Boat's facility is intended to highlight the need to maintain funding for submarine production.

Electric Boat, a subsidiary of Virginia-based General Dynamics Corp, builds the submarines. The company employees more than 10,000 workers at Quonset Point and Groton, Conn.

Hoyer also plans to participate in discussions about workforce training and efforts to boost local manufacturing jobs.
