PAWTUCKET, R.I. (AP) - Pawtucket police say an officer suffered a broken ankle when he was kicked by a motorist after a traffic stop.

Police say the officer, whose name has not been released, was one of several trying to restrain 34-year-old Mario Soto of Bridgewater after a traffic stop on East Avenue Monday evening.

The officer was taken to a local hospital, where he was expected to undergo surgery. Soto was taken into custody. He was scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday on several charges.
