Providence, R.I. -
One person is dead after a Ford SUV crashed into an embankment on Orms Street and overturned in the middle of the road.
The crash happened around 7 a.m. Sunday morning.
According to Providence police, three men were traveling in an SUV towards the Smith & Orms Street intersection at a high rate of speed.
The officer on scene initially said the SUV swerved in an attempt to miss an oncoming vehicle, but Providence Police traffic investigators say they have not yet determined why the SUV swerved.
Providence police say the vehicle was traveling "well over the speed limit".
Two men who witnessed the crash also said the vehicle was traveling at high speed.
The SUV, police say, crashed into a set of stairs leading up to a multi-story home. The force of the impact caused the SUV to flip over. Police say at least one person was thrown out of the vehicle.
The crash has left one man dead, according to Police.
The two other men were taken to an area hospital. Their conditions are unknown.
