Former Rutgers forward Gilvydas Biruta set to transfer to Rhode Island

Posted: Updated:

It appears the Gilvydas Biruta is heading for a reunion.

Almost two weeks after announcing his intent to transfer from Rutgers, Biruta appears set to join his former high school coach, Dan Hurley, at Rhode Island — according to a report on the website, GoLocalProv.com.

Hurley — who left Wagner after two seasons last month — coached Biruta at St. Benedict's Prep in Newark.

The departure of the 6-8 power forward from the Scarlet Knights basketball program after only two seasons was a major surprise for head coach Mike Rice. The second-year Rutgers coach considered the rugged Biruta one of his favorite players and best examples of his hard-nosed style of play.

Should Biruta eventually end up at Rhode Island, he would have to sit out next season and then be eligible to play for the 2013-14 season.

Biruta won't be the first member of the Rutgers program to end up in Kingston. Just last week, longtime program staple Jim Carr — the team's Director of Basketball Operations — joined the Rams' staff as an assistant coach.
